WELCOME TO THE GRAY GOOSE BUILDING

Former Janesville Tobacco warehouse to become office, retail space

On the outside, the 23,000-square-foot brick warehouse at 207 N. Academy St. is big, gray, and unassuming.  Inside, three of four floors of the expansive structure are empty from the heavy wood floors to the 16-foot-high beam ceilings.  Plans for the warehouse renovations will keep the building’s heavy wooden interior structures uncovered and center-stage, making it a unique and open office or retail space.

Building owner Mark Robinson has never thought of the massive, four-story former tobacco warehouse he owns on North Academy Street as a white elephant.

Instead, Robinson has always called the building The Gray Goose.  Later this year, The Gray Goose is going to honk, beat its wings, and command some attention once again as the building undergoes a $3.5 million renovation.

WHY JANESVILLE

Rock County’s current population of 160,104 (2014 estimate) continues to rank among Wisconsin’s largest counties. Steady-to-moderate population growth, as measured by comparative census data, is directly attributed to the County’s close proximity to larger, metropolitan locations such as Madison, Milwaukee, Rockford, and Chicago. Geography, industry, and transportation linkages, coupled with lower cost of living indicators – continue to facilitate Rock County’s overall positive growth patterns.

A COMMUNITY COLLABORATION

In December of 2013, the City of Janesville announced the kickoff of the Rock Renaissance Area Redevelopment and Implementation Strategy (ARISE).  The ARISE Plan is a playbook for action that will position downtown Janesville as a vibrant neighborhood where commerce, culture, entertainment, and history intersect.    The Gray Goose renovation project is another step forward in the ARISE plan and a great example of private and public collaboration to help preserve the historical character of this building while providing class-A office space in downtown Janesville.
